Geography of Saint Kitts and Nevis

Nature
The central parts of both islands are occupied by a volcanic mountain range, which reaches its highest height in Mount Misery on Saint Christopher with 1,156 m asl. The island of Nevis consists almost exclusively of a single mountain, which in Nevis Peak reaches an altitude of 985 m asl. Around this island is a coral reef, and the beaches consist largely of sand.
The pass winds give the islands a pleasant climate. The average temperature during the year is around 26 °C and the annual rainfall is around 1,300–1,400 mm. However, hurricanes occasionally cause severe damage. The higher lying parts of the islands have lush tropical vegetation, which in turn seals to rainforest.
Nature conservation
In 2009, the country had seven protected areas, of which two were national parks; the largest was the Southeast Peninsula (26 km2).

In October 2000, the UNESCO fort in Brimston Hill declared the national park part of humanity’s cultural heritage. The fort is located in the center of the park, covers 10 acres and was built in the 1690’s. It is a living testimony to the clashes between Spaniards and Frenchmen in the Caribbean.
In 2001, Prime Minister Denzil Douglas was awarded the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Peace Prize for his constant efforts for unity and peace.
In March 2004, Douglas visited Santo Domingo to attend a CARICOM meeting on AIDS. In support of the fight against the AIDS epidemic in the Caribbean, the United States provided $ 15 million. US $ over a 5 year period. In his speech, Douglas said “the disease is a challenge that blocks progress in the programs against AIDS in the Caribbean” and that “discrimination and exclusion marginalize many people from treatment”.
The Cuban Mission Miracle program started in St. Kitts & Nevis in August 2005. By March 2006, 8,000 people had been through the program and had been treated for their vision problems.
