The reader Adriana Gonçalo gave me the idea of today’s post: I’ve never talked about coffee tables specifically. So let’s talk about it!
The center and support tables are essential in a living room/home theather due to its function: Attend the people sitting on the sofas, chairs and armchairs, in support of the objects they are using. It’s too annoying to have a cup of coffee on the couch and not where to lay the cup, is not it?
To efficiently and elegantly perform their function, tables need to follow some “rules”:
1) They can not be distant from the seat to the point of making it difficult to use, that is, they must be at a comfortable distance from the seat, stretch the arm and rest the object on it. 60 cm is the usual.
Narrow and matching the height of the sofa (although the first table could be black and/or metal – I think it would match the room better – see that there is no wood element in the rest of the room)
2) They should not be too high or too low to make them disharmonious and/or difficult to use (especially for the elderly or disabled). They should follow, more or less, the height of the sofa seat (about 40cm)
The puffs also work as tables of support. And in the 2nd photo, we can not call it a table, but it is a support that does not disturb the circulation
3) They should do this without disturbing the circulation through the room (60cm away is the usual for the center ones and consider this same value if there is a circulation area next to the side table). In some cases the room is small or the sofa is big for the living room and what happens is that there is simply no room for the coffee table. According to Vintageinconfidential, in this case, there are some solutions: Use puffs (with wheels are great), supports (carpentry) around the sofa (including back-not comfortable, but better than none and with 15 cm already help a lot), those pieces in wood And other materials that fit into the arms of the sofa, etc.)
A lousy and another great example of seat backs. In the 1st photo the table is far and too low.In 2a. The sofa is surrounded by supports.
Round, oval and organic tables are versatile and give movement. Tables that have “puppies” are also a great and charming idea.
Also, some tips:
A) Glass tables “weigh” less (but be careful in choosing. If you have kids at home, mostly).Rounded corners are safer and prevent accidents.
B) Do not put so many decorative objects on the table that ends up being impossible to use as a support for new objects.
C) Placing an illumination on the table gives a sophisticated effect (but be careful with reflective materials).
D) In this time of limited space tables with drawers or that allow to put puffs under them or that are also an extra seat, are very welcome.
E) If you have a reading corner, do not forget a table next to it.
F) The tables of support can also be useful in bathrooms and closets (if possible).
